Degrees of Production

KPF Traveling Fellowship

‘Degrees of Production’ is a research project supported by the KPF Traveling Fellowship, exploring traditional modes of making across Thailand. From handwoven silk in the northeast, to leatherwork for shadow puppets in the south, to centuries-old bronze casting in Ubon, the study traces how vernacular techniques persist in a world shaped by automation and standardisation.

These methods reflect more than just craft: they encode cultural memory, environmental adaptation, and local economies. Our documentation engages both the tactile and the systemic, questioning what is lost when processes are streamlined, and what can be gained by returning to rooted ways of working. This interest continues to shape our own practice, where we look to the vernacular not as style, but as a responsive logic shaped by climate and cultural practice.
